We are a resource and support for Parents
and Teachers of Special Education children
in Milford and surrounding towns. 

PRIMARY MISSION
- To help new Special Education parents AVOID THIS:

- Provide vital information and support.
- Help parents understand Special Education issues.
- Equip parents to hold schools accountable for effective educational results. 
- Advance the quality and delivery of Special Education services .

TOPIC:      YOUR CHILD: Successful Advocacy

WHERE:    Margaret Egan Center, Matthews Street, Milford
 
TIME:        7 p.m. - 9 pm

Does your child have a disability?
Then come and learn about how to be an effective advocate for your child, best practices and available services. Also, you will gain insight into your child’s legal and educational rights with three experts from the field of special education advocacy.


Guest Speakers: 

  • Tiffany Katz, Special Education Teacher/Advocate;
  • Amy Vatner, Special Education Attorney;
  • Jacqueline D. Jewett, MS Ed   

Ms. Katz is a special education teacher who has worked in resource rooms and self contained classrooms.  She earned her BA from the U of Colorado with a concentration in communication. She has many years of administering standardized academic assessments, writing IEP’s and running PPT meetings. She currently works with the parents of children with special needs teaching them how to effectively advocate for their children. 

Ms. Vatner, works as an advocate with the CT Association of Children and Adults with LD’s.  She has also worked as a Special Education Attorney for the CT Parent Advocacy Center and CT Legal Services, Inc.  She is a graduate of Harvard University & Northwestern University School of Law.

Ms. Jewett. Advocate, established her private practice, Academic Edge, LLC, in 1991. As an Educational Consultant she has made a significant difference in the lives of many children & adults in the Greater New Haven areas. She earned her BA from St. Lawrence University and her MS with a concentration in Special Education from SUNY, Albany. Her post grad studies in education leadership include programs from the Center for Montessori Teacher Education, School of Management at the College of New Rochelle and from Quinnipiac U.  She is currently the Regional Director for Partnership Programs for Renaissance School Services.

MADDIE SWEEDLER

Maddie is an 8th grader at West Shore Middle School, and a former Milford Eagles Cheerleader who was diagnosed in 2007 with leukemia.
She is now battling this awful disease again.
She is an amazing, resilient young lady and we are happy to host this benefit night for her.
All Proceeds will go to the Maddie Sweedler Benefit Trust.

PARENT SUPPORT MEETINGS
We get together for monthly "closed door" meetings with other parents of Special Education children, in a safe and confidential setting, to share ideas and learn about special educaiton issues that parents are facing.  These are usually held on the LAST WEDNESDAY of the month. (see Meetings )
